How it works
- 1Open the PDF you want to shrink.
- 2Pick a quality level, or leave the smart setting to choose based on what the file contains.
- 3Run the compression and compare the before and after size.
- 4Export if the result is acceptable, or try another level.
What this does to your file
Compression works on the images inside the document: they are re-encoded at a lower resolution or quality, while text and vector artwork are left alone so they stay sharp and selectable.
Common questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. The page loads a PDF engine into your browser and the document is read from disk by that engine. There is no upload endpoint, and once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the network and the tool still works.
Why did my file barely get smaller?
- A PDF that is mostly text and vector graphics has little to compress — its size is already close to the minimum. Large savings come from documents built out of scanned or photographic images.
Will the text get blurry?
- No. Text is not rasterized during compression, so it stays crisp at any zoom level and remains searchable.
Can I compress several files at once?
- Yes. Add the extra files to the queue and the same settings are applied to each of them.
How large a file can I use?
- The limit is your device's memory rather than a server quota. Documents up to a few hundred pages are routine; very large scanned files may need a desktop browser with more memory available.
