How it works
- 1Open the protected PDF.
- 2Enter the password you already use to open it.
- 3Confirm the document opens and the page count looks right.
- 4Export an unencrypted copy.
What this does to your file
The password you supply is used to decrypt the document in your browser, and the result is written out without encryption. Nothing is guessed, brute-forced or bypassed.
Common questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. The page loads a PDF engine into your browser and the document is read from disk by that engine. There is no upload endpoint, and once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the network and the tool still works.
Can it open a file whose password I don't know?
- No. This removes protection from documents you can already open; it is not a password recovery tool.
Is the password sent anywhere?
- No. It is used by the PDF engine running in the page and is discarded when you close the document.
What about a file that only restricts printing?
- Some documents are encrypted with an empty user password and only carry permission flags. Those open without a prompt, and exporting produces a copy without the restrictions.
